Default Strop Length

What strop length do you prefer?

I prefer a shorter strop with an overall length of 24" just because I feel I don't have enough space to stretch a longer one in the bathroom.

The reason I ask is my partner and I are thinking of adding a few inches to our strops or maybe adding a longer strop to our line.

What do you guys think?

I think most hanging strops are pretty much very close in length. I guess its considered standard. However I would think depending on your arm length you might want something either shorter or longer. I don't think it matters to the razor at all.

It is suspected the razor is haunted.

Default Monkey Arms

I strop right now with an Illinois Strop pre 1970. I think it is about 23" but if you look at my picture I'm 6'4 and have 36" sleeves I wish I had about a 30" strop so I could get 6 more inches on each swipe.
does anybody make a 36" high quility strop? I'm waisting these monkey arms!

I have a DOVO of nearly 16" and a HandAmerican Latigo strop of 23".
I like the length of the Dovo best. It's purely a pesonal choice of course.

DiceStone, talk to Keith a HandAmerican, he can send you pieces of horsehide that easily run 35" and he also sells real easy and nice hardware to put a custom strop together.

Bart.

Well I'll wait to hear more replies. But it sounds like I'll have to maybe offer custom length strops as needed.

Its funny you should mention it, but recently i've been experimenting with my strop, and sometimes only using half of it. Ive been keeping the stroke short, using the x pattern and believe it or not getting great results. I'm even considering making a shorter version (30cm or even shorter )as a travel strop.

24" is about standard length for most strops and once the handle and hardware are factored in you get about 17" of stropping surface. Longer strops tend to sway a bit side to side or twist when in use. I've made longer ones from both thick and thin leather, stiff and pliable leather and was never happy with them.

You will find most Dovo strops are both shorther and narrower than most and people found them fine for years.

Well I don't think I'll make any changes at this time.
Thanks for your replies.
