Limited Run of "NOS" Dovo 7/8"
I am very fortunate, due to the relationship that I enjoy with Dovo, to be able to offer for sale a very limited production run of a very unique razor. The Dovo "Best Class" Carbon Steel 7/8", French Point razor is another razor that is not "new old stock" in the traditional sense. An unfinished Model No. 55 7/8" razor blank from the 70's, recently discovered at the Dovo factory, has been mirror polished and set in new black scales. In addition, at my request, Dovo has added a variation of my favorite blade etch to these special razors. Thus the name I have given them - "Best Class". These razors come in the Dovo blue metal hinged case. They may be found on the site here --> http://www.vintagebladesllc.com/vsho...cat=168&page=1

Very nice looking razors, Jim! Can you tell us how you feel they shave?

Wow! Really nice razor. I wish things weren't so tight at the moment. I'm already jealous of you who will own one. Thanks Jim.

I have not had the opportunity to use one as yet, since they just came in. However, my experience with other 7/8's Dovo's of this period, which I own and have sold to many here on the forum, is that they are excellent shavers, superior in some ways to current production. Given that this can be taken as a biased viewpoint (BUY BUY BUY), it may be best for others to chime in.

Oh wow, I wanted a NOS German for some time, but I'm afraid that I can't afford to play. Still, it looks like a very nice razor.

Beautiful razor Jim. If I hadn't just purchased a Le Grelot from Martin at RasurPur this would be on my list. The NOS Fritz Bracht Super Bismarck that I bought from you last year is subperb - so I'm sure if you say this one is fantastic - it probably is.

According to Jim at Vintage blades there will only be a few dozen of these made so they will hopefully be a nice collector piece someday, regardless I went ahead and ordered one Thursday and was amazed to have it delivered Friday, of course I am not telling anyone here anything new about excellent service from Vintage blades as there was a personal note in packing and a sample item too.
To the razor the mirror finish on it is really good as is everything about it except perhaps it could have nicer scales but the fit finish and gold lettering are all top notch. I tested the razor out and perhaps maybe because it is so small a limited edition they have one of there better workers doing them but it felt shave ready, so this am I stropped it up and had a great shave could have been a little smoother and I will introduce it to some chromium oxide but it was actually sharp enough, I was shocked that it was and no pulling or tugging at all. It has a nice balance and feel to it sort of like an old Filarmonica definitely feels and shaves more like a less hollow blade then it actually is.

Thank you for the review Jim. You are right about the grind. As I communicated to you earlier, in a period catalog of the day, the No. 55 "Dovo Diamond Steel" razor was etched "Full Hollow Ground”. However, the catalog description states "extra hollow ground". While a bit confusing, you should know that my source at Dovo informs me that the terminology they used to describe the grind changed sometime in the 70's. At any rate, when I examine the blade in profile, it is certainly a full hollow grind at a minimum and some could consider it extra-full, although I will not make that claim.

20 passes on the linen followed by 40 on the latigo and I got a buttery smooth shave........one of the best I've had from a blade this size next to the 8/8 custom I bought from Josh Earl. Spectacular and well worth the money!!!

Well I held out as long as I could but today I caved and placed my order. Can't wait! Outstanding service as usual. Placed my order a little over three hours ago and got my shipping notice about twenty minutes ago...good stuff.
Thanks Jim! Looking forward to trying it out.

I received my razor on Monday. Thanks Jim! I really like the looks of the French Point and the razor has a nice weight to it.
I stropped it up and had my first shave Monday evening. The razor was a pleasure to use and gave a very close, smooth and comfortable shave. Very nice!
I'm looking forward to a lot of great shaves with this razor. Now I'm on the look out for similar razors as I like it that much.

AFAIK Vintage blades do not ship overseas. I asked Jim once but he wouldn't.

Re the DOVO 55 NOS razor that Jim @ Vintage Blades is selling: it's a very nice razor. I also got mine this past Monday, touched it up a bit, stropped it, and had an interesting shave. I say interesting only from the fact that the edge is 1/8" closer to my face than my typical 6/8 razors and that really sharp DOVO 55 bit me, but just a tiny bite, and only once, but it bit me nonetheless. I learned that the feel of a razor(s) that one becomes accustomed to needs to be cautiously modified with a new razor of diffferent size. Other than that tiny nick, the shave was very, very smooth and close and comfortable (other than that wee SM episode).
It's definitely a keeper. Those who like big razors should give Jim a call or check out his website and be prepared to spend a few bucks. I may not have done the Mastro Livi limited edition thing if this had become available first, then again, it probably wouldn't have made any difference.
RADly yours,
