My Kitchen Cutlery
Here are my kitchen knives. As you can see I really dig Henckels Four Star.
We live in a one room house with windows for walls. Although it is nice to look outside at the natural surroundings, the house presented some challenges in the storage department. I designed systems to suspend alot of stuff from the overhead.

Here is what the rack looks like stowed:

I like what you did with the storage. I have many of the Henkles that you have and really like them. I also have a Martin Yan Cleaver that is a little less bulky than most and I use a lot. I have been meaning to ask, what camera are you using? Nice photos.

Thanks. The digital camera I use is a Kodak DX6490. However most of my artsy photos are shot with a Nikon N90S 35mm SLR. I am a dinosaur. I still shoot film.

Way cool house. And a nice collection of knives I really like the storage safe out of the way with easy access. Now tell me more about the house.

Thanks!
The house is post and beam with two bathrooms and two lofts for sleeping. It has a 14 foot high ceiling which is why I was able to put a suspension bridge ten feet above the living room floor for Mr. Toes.
We have windos all around so the light is very welcoming. Here's the other part of the kitchen:

It is located on an 80 acre farm with a 300 foot mountain and seven miles of trails. We are very lucky to have been renting the place for the last six years. It's like living in a park. The Pootatuck River flows through our back yard so we have domestic ducks. Here's a video about them:
I have some shots of the outside I will post when I find them. However you can check out the website of the farm where we live:

That's awesome and give me a slight "Lost in the wild" feeling, except with out the ending . I'll have to show my wife the pictures when she wakes. Thanks for sharing.

And then the handle slips out of your hands, the door swings open and the baby crawling just in front of you (or Mr Toes if you don't have toddlers) is impaled by a dozen knives.
I don't think my wife would go for this idea.
The knives might stick to it because they weight less, but have you ever tested if hose cleavers keep hanging if that door swings open?
I don't mean to criticise. It is just that this was the first thing I thought of when I saw your solution. With a 3 year old and a 9 month year old, we always think about the location of sharp things.

This is one of the design criteria. Although we have no kids, we often have kids visiting. The knives are not on a door. They are on strong magnetic strips that are mounted to a board that is hinged to the overhead in my kitchen area. This is a picture of the board stowed:
This board hangs seven feet above the floor when stowed and it is at the back of a four foot wide counter when lowered. A child would have to be very resourcful and determined to get to my good cutlery.

Sorry I meant: if the board slipped out of your hand when almost locked and then swung down, would the cleavers stay attached to the magnetic strip or not?

If that board were to drop it would likely smash thru the window behind it. I would think at that point the cleavers, the ten inchers, the scissors and the big breaker (white handled steak knife) would fall from the magnets and either go out the window or land on the counter. The subsequent hail of very sharp steel and glass would likely cut me to ribbons. Wait, I think I'll go give it a try right now.

Neat idea. I don't like that the device holding the thing closed is suspended on a couple of eye-hooks, though. That should be beefed up a bit.

Good. Report back with pictures once it meets code.
I've got a few Henckels myself (my chef's knife, steak knives, manicure scissors, straight razors, etc.), and I've got a pair of Wusthof shears, which I really enjoy. I haven't bothered to purchase a knife "set" yet, but when I do, it'll probably be Wusthofs. I've tried both brands' current lines of knives, and the Wusthofs are higher quality, in my opinion. I wouldn't mind Henckel at all, though. Who knows, maybe I'll mix and match both of 'em like I have been doing.

I have a Dexter which looks like your "butcher" knife. Mine is a bread knife. Its 8-10 inches with a slight smile and off-set. Cheap and a great knife!

Good eye Jordan. That white handled knife is a Dexter Russel. They call it a "breaker" or a "steak knife" because it is used to break large pieces of beef down to steaks.
I just watched my silly duck video. Over tha last few nights the critters (likely coyotes) have been scoring bigtime. Both of the Pekins (the white ones) and one of the Swedish(the black ducks with the white bib) have gone away.

I mentioned we have no walls because of the windows all around. With no walls you have no cabinets which is why I had to design all these unique storage solutions. So the pots are all hanging but what do you do with the lids? I hung them too:
