I just soaked my new purchases, a Wilkinson, a Thiers Issard Dandy and an Emu, in a weak vinegar solution hoping it would gently cleans the pitted and stained blade to leave a clean, shiny finish like it can do with silver and copper.

Now I have 3 dark blades with funny patterns on them and a very high tendancy to rust, there were rust spots appearing during the 10 mintues of rubbing with a white scouring pad.
Is this a known mistake amongst the pro's on here?
i will try to post some pics but it's a litlel awkward right now.

baking soda time if they are still rusting, wash em in it before starting over Vinegar is an acid = etchant. your basic chemical patina is what you have now, gone awry- etching can be a good make-up for blending blemishes, toning down bright mirror but only do it after its cleaned up to a degree that suits you using the molarity of your choice.
Good point about the baking soda. This is going to be especially important if you got any of the vinegar (acetic acid) in the space between the scales and the tang in the region of the pivot pin. Wiping the acid off of the rest of the blade will remove most of it but the only way to get it out of that pivot pin area is a good soaking in a baking soda solution.
On the bright side, you have definitely learned one thing not to do so you are smarter now!
