Manhattan Cutlery Company

Gentleman, as a homage and tribute to " the norm" I decided to pick up the completion of a Wade & Butcher collegue, a near wedge Manhatten 7/8th+. This time I wish Camel bone for scales. Very difficult material to obtain in NL. But I laid hands on some basics. As you may see, it will be a long long way to Tipperary.
A point of interest for the tinkerers among us the following.
The pivot hole was badly worn. I made a mixture of very hardening two component glue and a generous addition of hard steel filings. And filled the hole up.

A new pivot hole drilled with (I hope) a rock solid wear resistant result, see picture two..

Is there a Doctor in the house ?
I haven't come across the Manhattan brand. Were they made especially for export to the US?

History
1837 - H. Boker & Co. was founded in New York City, by Hermann Boeker, as a cutlery import firm.
1865 - Arbolito, Casa Roberto Boker, established an office in Mexico City.
1867 - Boker built a factory in Solingen, Germany.
1868 - Knives marked for the Manhattan Cutlery Co. were imported from Sheffield. England, until 1916.

Gentlemen, meanwhile I'm one step further with the decoration of the Manhattan. What did I do?
I've narrowed the elementary scales on the bottom towards the future pivot. A little more "zeeg" (an impossible to translate Dutch word which means something like "belly; perhaps "shee? ) gives a little more elegance.
A few pictures in the production process in random order. The scales and wedge stacked on top of each other (double-sided tape). Then turned over for another impression.
Then some comparative images with an 8/8th “modern” full hollow Schulze.
Next step will be the drilling of the pivot holes in the scales.Man 2.jpgMan 3.jpgMan 4.jpgMan 5.jpg This is always an exciting moment for me. Can only be accomplished well if the scales are still completely flat. Si non, the razor will never close dead center.

A tiny bit more sand papering on the centre of the the belly I guess. But we aren't ready yet. Bone is a jolly good material to work on . . . .

My dear wife Mena looked at my working hands this afternoon and told me: "This Manny one will after completion never reach the masters bathroom; goes right away to my cabinet of curiosities glass display case!"
The maiden name of my wife is "Pauw". Which means "Peacock". Some illustrious SR brands used to show a richly ornamented P'cock on their scales. The in there hidden steel never made it to my bathroom ;)

It's fine. Also Nice knife BTW .. And .. In reference to going off topic , I mean we admins are not ogres , we don't get easily offended by discussions straying as long as its not like one second talking razors and then going on about politics or something drastic like that. When people are talking , discussions often stray to similar things and that's fine...Personally, I don't see any problem.

Salamader, seen Jaro's given space I'd like to let know that big, bigger and biggest is not my kitchen core. I have huge hands. So my knuckles don't harmony working with standard office knives. So I achieved a very basic 63HRC miniature rough Japanese Deba blade. Worked hard on it. Provided a chestnut handle. Mind, the blade is just 11 centimeters. But my paw fits. 1630868405586.png

The one I posted is a new 8” chef knife I ordered from a supply house. The brand is Stahl, high carbon. The handle and block allow easy sanitation. Plus the block doesn’t dull the blade.

I prefer the shorter blade, my other is 11”. Also, I like the handle non round shape. In a former life I was a meat cutter so maybe its something I just got used to. I don’t want to twist or have to hold tight.

Anyway, thank you for posting. You did a great job and I like your razors and knives .??

Jaro, I'm a recent member since May 22, '21. So I haven't had a chance to run into a meanie Admin yet. My caution is prompted by moderator behavior on a Dutch forum I used to be a member of. The slightest deviation from the straight razor subject was qualified as "off topic" and immediately thwarted. So I'm a little careful.
