Hi everyone,

My name is Vale; I was around the forums about 12 years ago after a buddy got me my first straight razor through SRP. Looking to get back into the game and glad to be around!
Welcome. Glad you’re back. A lot of good people here willing to help if needed

Glad to be back on SRP! I've been away and at one point I was lured to the "other" site..... To be honest, I have no idea of what happened or who/what/where, I just know the "feel" was not the same.

I'm ecstatic to see some users I was familiar with from other sites.

I lost my wife Aug. 2020 and the first year was rather tough for me.... I'm feeling better now, I'm slowly getting "interested" in things again. Straight razors were put on the back burner in 2019 when my wife had her first stroke. They have remained there until now.... I'm still not sure I want to resurrect the hobby..... I live alone now and the thought of "hurting myself" with no one to call the cavalry should something happen has me sitting on the fence a bit.

I'm not sure what I'll be doing in the next few years, but at least I've found a home for my razor interest once again.

Regards

Christian

Is there a Doctor in the house ?
Christian, I'm sorry to hear of your troubles, it certainly takes lots of time for grief to recede. I used to tell people that it would always hurt just as much, but that they would gradually think about it less often.

Hope you're staying warm in Winnipeg.

Hi all,

I was a member here a long while back but never dove in.

I travel a lot for work and don't want to commitment, both in terms of time and products, for a full straight razor setup. What is a good alternative to upgrade from a cartridge razor? Thank you!

Welcome Zed,

I used to work a shift schedule at a remote location, 3 weeks on, 3 weeks off. I will give you my experience.

1) Double Edge Safety Razor; Will be the introduction to wet shaving (Assuming you are not). Travel kits can be easy to put together. Double Edge safety razor blades are a lot cheaper than cartridges. One mistake we make in our ignorance is to try and extend our cartridges as long as we can. If you go DE, feel free to change blades often. A lot of time Skin irritation and sensitivity is from using a razor past its intended life.

These razors are more intuitive to learn when transitioning from cartridges. However, there is still a learning curve. Use little to no pressure.

2) Shavette Style Straight Razor; This is a popular stepping stone from DE to True Straight Razors. I used a Feather Style (Proprietary Blades) Disposable Straight Razor for my 12 years of Traveling. I still had my enjoyment of Straight Shaving on the road, but didn't need a strop or worry about sharpening (Honing). There are many makes and models on the market that use half a DE Blade. These are the ones I use now when I am mobile.

These still have a steeper learning curve, as you have to adjust the attack angle of the edge throughout the shave.

Key Notes; There is "NO" best product. Shaving is a personal preference and experience. It is about finding what is "Best" for you. If you start in the Double Edge Razor Blade market, get a "Sample" pack of blades and try them all. You will find your preference through use, not other people's opinions.

Good Luck

Frank

I would suggest watching as many videos as you can on shaving with double edge and straight razors. There are some good ones on YouTube

Thank you, will do!

Quick searching around and I'm seeing the DE-89 as a good starter safety razor. Will look a little more into it later in the week.

Hello everyone! Good to see the true and original SRP back up and running again. I was on the original one back in 2013 and am still shaving with a straight and honing my razors. I haven’t been very active on the forums much including shaving forums but am happy to be around here and recognize some names!

Thank you! There was a moderator back then. I forget his screen name. Something like hiraui. He was from Hawaii I think. He was a good guy and was wondering if he is here?

I really don't know but maybe one of the moderators here would know. I often wonder if a gentleman by the name Rezdog from British Columbia was here. Hope so.
